Sredinom i krajem četrdesetih godina prošlog veka u našem gradu aktivno su radili sledeći bokserski klubovi : Vojvodina, Eđšeg, Građevinar, Brodarac i Slavija.

BOKS 4

(Joca Leđenac i Vlada Stanisavljević – Beli)

BOKS 15

Ipak, to nije dugo trajalo, krajem četrdesetih godina fuzijom tri fudbalska kluba – Slavije, Radničkog i Vojvodine u FK “Sloga” počelo je osipanje i ostalih klubova.

When box occupied Salajka

They call box a „noble skill“. Comparing it to the box of today and it’s present incarnations, you could say it once was.

BOKS 20

There are so many admirers of this sport in this world that it would be a waste not to share with you what I’ve found out thanks to some of my friends and fellow citizens, and that is a fact that right after WWII box was the most popular sport in Novi Sad. Through the middle and the end of forties of last century in our city activily worked following box clubs: Vojvodina, Eđšeg, Građevinar, Brodarac i Slavija.

There was more boxing than football clubs! Of course, it lasted very short and  football was taking over very fast, but still, it will stay remembered that box had many devotees, some of them active boxers, some of them buzzing around the ring, some of them were just bystanders and of course there was the audience.

BOKS 6

This is one story, you could even say a note about Boxing club “Slavija”, which arose and worked in one of my favourite parts of the town, Salajka.

Roots of BC “Slavija” descend from before the WWII, when some of the Slavija’s football players of that time engaged in box alongside football in then only two boxer clubs of Novi Sad Vojvodina and Rapid. They often organized, on Slavija’s field, mutual friendly box matches, which attracted a great number of spectators, which caused the football presidency to consider making a boxing section. However, upcoming war and occupation of the country scattered the idea.

boks 21

All the same, how national liberation movement and fascist resistance grew, in such way grew a number of youth, members of SKOJ (Socialist Comitee of Youth of Yugoslavia) who gathered on the field of Slavija. To camouflage their activity alongside football arose and boxing club of Slavija. The executive of boxing section and organizer of boxing school was Milan Simin, prewar aviation Sergeant, who under the sport flag trained youth in weapons handling and some war skills. Already then some youngsters have shown great boxing talent and one of the best was Radivoj Jovanović – Radić who in September of 1941 in full hall of hotel „Sloboda“ (now DOM JNA) boxed as a boxer of BC „Slavija“ vs. Then pretty much known Hungarian boxer Pap. Although he was better, Jovanović nonetheless had lost the match on points, by the decision of partiall judges, but large number of spectators from Salajka and Podbara (parts of the city) almost made a rebellionwhich could have end up, considering that the country was under the ocupation, tragically. That September could be called an official month of establishing Boxing Club of Slavija.

BOKS 5

(Rada Todorov – Popaja)

Club has, during the war , existed more on the paper because there was no official tournaments but with the ending of the war and organizing competitions in Serbia and Vojvodina BC “Slavija” successfully activated and more than well confronted other clubs.

Real success comes when high levelled teacher of box, Živko Bančić, returns from the Army. He has as a NOB (National Liberation Combat) fighter trained for a long time “Boxing Section of XXXVI Elite Division”…

BOKS 13

(Partizan 36th division – Pocman Steva, Klagenfurt 1945)

…and with his taking over the steering-wheel over the professional work of Slavija, he contributes success and popularity of box, not only in Novi Sad. Živko Bančić has represented Yugoslavia as a Judge at the Olympic Games in Rome 1960 and twenty years later in Moscow.

BOKS 9

(Vladimir Bajčev – before match, seconds Todor i Živko Bančić )

BOKS 10

At first, box club counted around 40 competitors, which, having in mind the difficulties around acquisition of needed props, and the fact that not everyone was that talented to be on a first team, could not be involved in active work and competing.

More talented than the rest, at that time, were: Vlada Stanisavljević – Beli, Đura Stanisavljević, Svetozar Cvejić – Cica,  Aleksa Bančić – Dempsej, Petar Krstonošić – Bimba, Milivoj Pavlica – Kusa, Nikola Matica, Jožef Teleki,  Đorđe Nikolić,  Miša Uzunović, Vladimir Bajčev, Rada Todorov – Popaja, Milutin Popov and a few other guys.

The best of them were Vlada Stanisavljević – Beli ,who couple of times had won a title of a champion of Yugoslavia in his category.

BOKS 4

(Joca Leđenac i Vlada Stanisavljević – Beli)

Aleksa Bančić – Dempsej who got his nickname by well-known American boxer Jack Dempsey, because he, the same as an American, had the devastating blow and often knew to take blows deliberately, waiting for the right moment to use his unusually heavy blow and in one strike solve the match and knockout his opponent.

( Aleksa Bančić – Dempsej )

As much, very good was and Svetozar Cvejić – Cica who had completely different style of boxing. Namely, he patiently collected points circling around the opponent and with minor bumps he simply “pecked” and that’s how he got the matches by judges voting.

Also we have to mention and Jovica Bančić – Baba who in his entire career had lost only one match and it was from the later Champion of the Balkans.

BOKS 18

Boxing club ” Slavija” had given a couple of champions of Vojvodina and Serbia and some of the competitors were highly ranked in Yugoslavia Championship.

 BOKS 14

(BC “Slavija – in Jagodini)

It’s worth to say that BC “Slavija” acted on a football field and, so to speak, borrowed space from their friends in FC “Slavija” and on their matches there was often more spectators than on the football matches.

Boxing club competed for couple of years in a team and individual Championships of the city, because as I mentioned before, five boxing clubs were present in the city then.

BOKS 15

Boxers of Slavija in 1946-before the show

However, it didn’t last long. At the end of forties, by the fusion of three clubs  –  Slavija, Radnički and Vojvodina to FC “Sloga” scattering of other clubs had begun. Boxers, one by one, moved to Vojvodina, boxing section maintained artificially for couple more years but with less and less finance and even less competitors Box club practically seized to exist. Since that time, up to today, favourable conditions had never been created for resuscitation of this sport at the Sport Company of “Slavija”. And how things stand in Novi Sad, even wider than that, situation for box isn’t any better.

Youth of today likes better to sit at the computer or chase the pokemon, than to engage in a “Noble skill”.
