Sommerolympiade, Siegerehrung Weitsprung
Sprint 100m – Sprint 200m – Skok u dalj – Štafeta 4 x 100m = 4  ZLATNE medalje.

race-still

A možda  i nećete.

” RACE “

large_large_2m7GhEQg36uic3cWEjXhOqmYNAB

This is probably one of those films, which no one, up until now, didn’t dare to film, because of the fact that one of the most legendary Olympic games, held in Berlin in 1936 had for it’s biggest star a black man, or African American –say it how you like it. And that his name was mentioned only because nobody could deny him four golden medals he has won.

Sommerolympiade, Siegerehrung Weitsprung

Sprint 100m – Sprint 200m – Long jump – Relay – race 4x100m =  4 GOLDEN medals

This story is, of course, about famous athlete Jesse Owens. His real name is James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens, but he stayed Jesse Owens only because his teacher didn’t understand dark skinned boy who everybody called J.C. – which was his name in short. He was born on September 12, 1913 in Oakville, Alabama, and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He died of lung cancer in Tuscon, Arizona on March 31, 1980. He was burried in “Oak Woods Cemetery” in Chicago. Which is only one more indicator how much Americans „loved“ him. Considering many more giants were burried there for whom there was no space on cemeteries for „giants“.

Jesse_Owens_1971_Ajman_stamp

This biographical – historical drama inspired by true events was filmed half in Canada and USA, a little bit in Germany and Italy. Film was mostly sponsored by Owens family as is of foundation which late athlete had found. Very few words about film, don’t you think?

race-still

Perhaps because in title itself there is a double meaning i English „RACE“ – running match or breed? Stephen Hopkins is a director, and a role of Owens plays young Stephen James. Hopkins is born on Jamaica and up until now this is most likely his biggest film. Besides Jeremy Irons there are no big stars in the movie but the overall atmosphere put one more star next to each actor’s name. The plot begins, of course, with Jesses coming to the University of Ohio, where he gets scholarship thanks to his speed, but not technique. For his success in the Olympics, most deserved, after himself of course, is Larry Snyder, who young Owens teaches his own technique and makes a perfect athlete out of him.

The whole plot of the film could be reduced to the first part. Preparation of Jesse for the Olympics. America, which was still clearly racially defined, was also divided in the opinion should they be a part of the Olympics on a nazi field. The attitude of the whites towards blacks was clearly portrayed in the film. For a moment, watching it, I thought „ Well at least Germans were honest and they didn’t hide anything!!!“

images

However, in some parts of the movie it is explained how big was the preassure on young Owens. On one side, his wish to compete and a sport spirit in a combination with his worth, no matter the skin colour, and on the other the preassure not to go by whites around America to his closest friends and kin. Partition in the opinion by all except for his coach, who even though a Jew himself, didn’t care that coming event is held in a country which puts his own Nation on trucks in broad day light and sends them to a geto. He probably cosidered that the same as relationship between whites and blacks in America.

ownst

This is a well directed movie with a beautiful photography and excellent story about rasism and sport. And with a good reason. Because Jesse Owens had won over German Carl ‘Lutz’ Long, who was Europian champion of that time. And German champion having lost from the American athlete, had ran a Honorary Circle, arm in arm with him, in front of Hitler’s very nose in the middle of Berlin. That can do only true and big sportists. Him and Jesse stayed friends until the beginning of the war, when Lutz Long was mobilized, sent to front where he, at the and had lost his life, allegedly of wounds somewhere in Italy in 1943.

owenslong100_v-ardgrosswidescreen

There are many versions about whether he was sent to front only because of his relationship with Jesse Owens, although, by Owens himself the story about how Hitler didn’t want to shake his hand was politically motivated. By one story, in his autobiography, he says chancellor had waved at him while he was running an Honorary Circle, and by the other there is even a photo where you can see them shaking hands. Anyhow, Germans are „little kittens“ considering hatred and hipocracy in a comparison to America of that day. Attitude of whites towards blacks is „nicely“ portrayed in the film, so we don’t even have to mention Martin Luther King and everything that happend until the end of sixties. It is enough to say, that President Roosvelt, in the midst of election camapaign, fearing the reacton of the white folk, refused to accept Owens in the White House. Hipocracy went so far that when Owens returned home arbitrarily from the European tour of American athletes after the Olympics, because of bad conditions and hunger (!?!) American Olympic Union banned him from EVERY sport competition! He continued to pursue athletics by giving enormous advantage to his oponnents, or by racing a horse. He ended up in Chicago working as a local DJ in a jazz club. Jesse Owens – an American star of the Olympics in Berlin in 1936…

George H. W. Bush honoured him, posthumously in 1990 by a „Congress Gold Medal“.

When you finish watching this touching film you will ask yourself: How many sportist disapeared thanks to prejudice, hipocracy and politics? And then continue to watch present Olympics in Rio, where is the most percentage of hungry people in one city and than you will understand. … And maybe you won’t.
